La Relacion (The Story) by Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca. The Spanish expedition of Narvaez is on its way to Mexico, but gets waylaid by a hurricane in the islands. Refitted, they go into a bar and hire a pilot. Instead of Mexico, they end up around Tampa, but they aren't really sure. A bunch of them get off the ship with the intention of meeting again later. Well, nobody was sure where to meet, so the guys on land start out on foot to Mexico. They tried building boats, but that worked out about as well as anything I've told you so far. Years later, Alvar finally shows up in Mexico, buck naked, with a group of Indian followers and a really bad sunburn. True story! 1542 Price TBA |
